Chair, St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation (1979 - 1992)

George Campbell MacLean, C.M., M.C., L.L.B., Q.C., was named to the Winnipeg Real Estate Board’s place of honor for 1989 in recognition of outstanding contributions to the quality of life and development of Winnipeg and for exceptional achievement in a specific field of endeavour.

George Campbell MacLean was born in St. Boniface, in 1921.  After graduating from Norwood Collegiate, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillary Corps in 1940, and served overseas, attaining the rank of major and earning the Military Cross.

Mr. MacLean is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, the co-founder and senior partner in the law firm of Newman MacLean, and received his appointment as Queen’s Counsel in 1961.  He has been involved with various service groups and organizations:  past president of the St. Boniface-Norwood Kinsman Club; served as treasurer for both the district and national executives of the Association of Kinsman Clubs of Canada; he was chairman of the board of directors of Rainbow Stage (roof installed during this period); and was on the board of directors of the Manitoba Tourist and Convention Association and of the Manitoba Cancer and Research Foundation.

He has also had extensive experience in municipal law, having spent some 25 years as municipal solicitor for the city of St. Vital and the city of Transcona prior to amalgamation with the City of Winnipeg; and at the time of his induction was the solicitor for the town of Steinbach.

Mr. MacLean has a special interest in the health care field and was chairman of the board of the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation as well as vice-chairman of the board of directors of the St. Boniface General Hospital and is an honorary-director of the Manitoba Hospice Foundation Inc.  In 1992, the St. Boniface General Hospital’s Research Centre was officially named the G. Campbell MacLean Building.

He was heavily involved in labor-management relations and was the chairman of the Manitoba Labour Management Review Committee.

Also, Mr MacLean was the sole arbitrator under the Northern Flood Agreement and a member of the board of trustees of the Bank of Montreal’s First Canadian Funds.  Mr. MacLean is a member of the Order of Canada 1987.
