Internationally acclaimed for her novels, poetry, short stories and plays, Carol Shields is the Citizens Hall of Fame's 22nd inductee and is being honoured for all she has done to enhance and support artistic and cultural life in Winnipeg. Shields recently received the Order of Manitoba and this provincial honour is one of many awards conferred on her over the years. She has also been awarded the Order of Canada, the Pulitzer Prize and the Governor General's Award for The Stone Diaries. In this novel as well as her bestseller Larry's Party and the Republic of Love, a recognizable Winnipeg is portrayed in a positive light.

Besides Carol Shield's outstanding writing achievements that have brought international attention to Winnipeg and its literary and arts communities, it is noteworthy to mention her long standing academic career where she was a Professor of English at the University of Manitoba and writer-in-residence at the University of Winnipeg. Shields went on to become the fifth Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg in 1996.
