Mayor of Winnipeg (1972-1992)

William (Bill) Norrie Q.C. was Mayor of Winnipeg from 1979 to 1992.  Prior to his election to City Council he was elected as a Trustee of the Winnipeg School Board from 1965-71 which he served as Chairman for two years.  In 1971 he was elected to the City of Winnipeg Council and its Executive Policy Committee.  He was first elected as Mayor in 1979 and was subsequently re-elected in 1983, 1986 and 1989.  In 1983 Mayor Norrie received the largest number of votes ever given to a Mayor in the City of Winnipeg.

Appointed Queen's Counsel in December 1977, Mr. Norrie, a Rhodes Scholar, has been honoured by numerous organizations.  He is an honorary member of the Carpenters' Union, was named a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and admitted to the Legion of Honour Degree by the Canadian Order of DeMolay.  He is the recipient of the Phillippine-Canada Friendship Medal of Honour, the Taras Shevchenko Medal of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee and the B'Nai Brith Canadian Humanitarian Award for the preservation of human rights.  In May 1980 the University of Winnipeg awarded him an Honorary L.L.D. degree recognizing Dr. Norrie's twenty-four years of service to the University's Board of Regents.

Since stepping down as Mayor of Winnipeg in 1992, Bill Norrie has been active in the community.  He serves on a number of boards including the Winnipeg Foundation and the Winnipeg Arts Advisory Council.  He chaired the successful 1993 Jimmy Carter Work Camp building blitz which resulted in Habitat for Humanity constructing 18 new homes for low income families.  More recently, Bill Norrie chaired the Manitoba School Divisions / District Boundaries Review Commission and received the Order of Canada.

Mr. Norrie's dedication to the City of Winnipeg is without question and he has certainly left an indelible mark on several areas of our city including the Exchange District, Chinatown, North Portage and The Forks, to name a few.
