Dr. Arnold Naimark was chosen in the contemporary category, which means he has been active in the second half of the 20th century to present day. Growing up in Winnipeg’s North End, he excelled in school and chose like other previous inductees to make Winnipeg his lifetime home, instead of being lured to many opportunities that presented themselves in other cities throughout the world. As a result, Winnipeg became the beneficiary of an individual who has had a very impressive and outstanding medical career and is widely acknowledged as a distinguished researcher, educator and administrator. He served as the University of Manitoba’s Dean of Medicine, was its president over three terms and even served a term as Vice Chancellor.
Dr. Nairmark was the first Chairman of the North Portage Development Corporation and held that position from 1983 to 1994. He has served on over 80 university and other local ad-hoc committees and task forces.
One of his proudest achievements is the pivotal role he played in attracting Dr. Naranjan Dhalla to lead Winnipeg’s world renowned heart research activities and develop the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to this community and to the medical field as a whole, Dr. Naimark has received numerous awards including the Order of Canada, Order of Manitoba this year and a special 2001 Lieutenant Governors Medal for Excellence in Public Administration. In presenting the latter one, Lieutenant Governor Peter Liba said his name is synonymous with public service.
Dr. Naimark continues to raise the bar at the highest levels by his insatiable pursuit of new goals that have him serving on a number of health and bio-technology committees. With the challenges that lie ahead for Manitoba’s important health sector, there is no question Winnipeg is very fortunate to have an individual with such formidable talents and ability that is willing to serve the community and make a difference.
